UK Foreign Minister Criticizes Netanyahu Government Over Gaza
Speaking at the Labour Party’s annual conference, Miliband argued that the security threats facing Israel “cannot justify” the actions that have followed. He also outlined a tougher approach toward the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
His remarks drew strong applause from attendees as he addressed the humanitarian suffering of Palestinians and discussed changes to the UK government’s position.
"I want to say to the millions of people in this country, and indeed elsewhere, who have been moved and outraged by the plight of the Palestinian people, we hear you. You were right," he said.
Miliband said Labour had adopted a different approach under Andy Burnham’s leadership, pledging to speak out against alleged abuses in both Gaza and the West Bank.
“And under Andy's leadership, we have reset our approach. We call out ethnic cleansing by the settler terrorists in the West Bank. We call out the evidence of war crimes in Gaza. We call out Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine, and we match word with action.”
He also announced steps aimed at limiting economic ties with Israeli settlements, saying the UK would take measures beyond issuing public condemnations.
