Chairman Cassidy Releases Bombshell Report Showing Teachers’ Unions Harming Children, Prioritizing Radical Ideology over Student Success

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a report detailing how the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are promoting dangerous ideology instead of advancing our children’s learning. This comes after Cassidy rebuked the NEA and the AFT, the two largest teachers’ unions in the U.S., for cultivating a culture of antisemitism that marginalizes their Jewish members.

“Children are struggling to read and to do basic math. Instead of helping students succeed, teachers’ unions are injecting a dangerous, anti-American agenda into our classrooms,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Parents deserve to send their children to school without worrying that they will be indoctrinated with DEI and taught that Americans have ‘misplaced faith’ in our institutions.”

Despite the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) recording unprecedentedly low math and reading scores for K-12 students, the NEA and the AFT are prioritizing political activism and indoctrination. In recent years, the NEA has significantly increased its political spending, supported anti-Republican initiatives, issued guidance encouraging educators to circumvent policies designed to protect parental rights and oversight in public education, and encouraged teachers to discuss controversial social and political issues in the classroom. Similarly, the AFT has expanded its political and administrative spending, recommended incorporating radical gender and sexuality topics across all academic subjects, and actively supported Democratic Party-aligned initiatives, including the anti-Trump “No Kings” movement.

The HELP Committee report found that these unions are:

Pushing an anti-American message while targeting Republican elected officials.

The NEA distributed materials which characterize Republicans in the state legislature as employing an “arsenal of racist dog whistles” alongside anti-transgender rhetoric, instructing advocates to frame political opponents as using “strategic racism and transphobia to harm us all.”
The NEA partnered with far-left organizations that promote the view that Americans possess a “misplaced faith in the Constitution,” and argued against using Fireworks on the Fourth of July.
The AFT participated in #NoKings protests to oppose President Trump.

Indoctrinating children with radical gender and race ideology.

The NEA distributed materials which explicitly state that four-year-olds can identify with a gender that does not correspond to their biological sex.
The NEA encouraged teachers to use their mathematics curriculum as a vehicle to discuss political and social issues, including immigration and deportation.
The NEA supported “Black Lives Matter” initiatives and critical race theory.

Promoting antisemitism in classrooms and endangering Jewish students and teachers.

The NEA encouraged antisemitic learning materials that ignore Israel’s right to exist, including a map that erased the centuries-long (and in some cases, millennia-long) presence of Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish peoples, as well as Christians and Sunni Arabs.
The NEA provided educators with materials that frequently and negligently blame the Holocaust on “Zionist Jews” rather than the actual Nazi perpetrators, compares Nazi persecution of Jews with Palestinian displacement, and denies the October 7, 2023 atrocities.
The NEA advocated for educators and K-12 students to use an antisemitic textbook which includes politically charged cartoons that portray Jews and Americans in a sharply negative light. One graphic, for example, depicts an American cowboy standing over a dead Native American while holding a gun; another depicts what appears to be an Israeli soldier standing over a dead Palestinian in a similar manner.

Affiliating with organizations that have ties to the Chinese Communist Party, the Iranian Ayatollah regime, Hamas, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the Islamic Jihad.
Abusing members’ dues to help get left-wing politicians elected.

The NEA and the AFT have spent nearly $670 million on political and social advocacy since 2015.

In light of these findings, Cassidy is calling for enhanced oversight of union political activities and increased transparency of their finances. In addition, Congress should review whether the NEA’s current activities remain consistent with the purposes of its federal charter.
