Claims of Mistreatment Emerge After Gaza Aid Flotilla Interception
(MENAFN) The Global Sumud Flotilla coalition claims that an activist was subjected to what it describes as “systematic torture” after Israeli forces intercepted multiple aid boats bound for Gaza, according to reports.
The group says a Spanish activist of Palestinian origin, along with Brazilian activist Thiago de Avila, was among 175 participants aboard more than 20 vessels that were stopped while sailing toward the Gaza Strip on a humanitarian mission aimed at challenging the blockade.
According to the coalition, the boats were intercepted in international waters during the operation, after which all detainees were taken into Israeli custody for questioning and possible legal action.
An Israeli court has reportedly extended the detention of the activists by two additional days, as stated by Adalah, a legal rights organization representing Palestinians in Israel.
“Following the illegal interception of 22 vessels belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) in international waters less than 80 nautical miles west of the Greek island of Crete, 175 civilian participants were abducted from 21 boats,” the flotilla said in a statement on its website.
The coalition further alleges that those detained were transferred to an Israeli naval vessel, where they were exposed to what it describes as physical and verbal abuse.
Israeli authorities have not publicly confirmed the specific allegations, according to reports.
