Palestinian FM Says Israel Working to Collapse Palestinian Authority
She said that, according to reports, the Israeli government is pursuing a strategy that “seeks the collapse of the Palestinian Authority,” adding that instability in the West Bank is being treated in a similar way to the devastation in Gaza, with the goal of pressuring Palestinians into leaving by making living conditions increasingly difficult.
Aghabekian also criticized Israel’s withholding of Palestinian tax revenues, describing it as far more than a financial dispute. She called it “an existential threat against Palestinian institutions and the people they serve.”
Addressing violence in Palestinian areas, she pointed to past and recent incidents involving settlers and Israeli forces. She cited the 2019 killing of 38-year-old Hamdi Al-Na’san, and said that years later his 14-year-old son, Aws Al-Na’san, was also killed in an attack near a school in Al-Mghayyer involving settlers and soldiers.
She described the two deaths as part of a continuing pattern of violence affecting the same family over time.
The minister added that while such incidents have been widely condemned internationally, she argued that Palestinian communities have still not received adequate protection. She said, according to her remarks, that “our communities, our people and our children were never afforded the protection they deserve, the protection they are entitled to, and the protection they desperately need.”
