Palestinian Player Rand al-Halawani Gets Released by Israel

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities released Palestinian football player Rand al-Halawani on Monday after she spent nearly a week in detention, according to Palestinian officials.

A statement from the Jerusalem Governorate said the 20-year-old member of the Palestinian women’s national team was ordered to remain under house arrest for five days following her release.

According to reports, Halawani was summoned for questioning last Tuesday at a police station in west Jerusalem. After being questioned, she was arrested and brought before a court, which approved an extension of her detention.

Videos circulated on social media showed Halawani reuniting with relatives after her release from custody.

Meanwhile, former national team player Natalie Abu Diya remains detained. Reports said Israeli forces arrested her during a raid on her home in the West Bank city of Ramallah on the same day Halawani was taken into custody.

Commenting on the cases, Palestinian Football Association spokesperson Dima Youssef said the arrests of the two athletes “were not an isolated incident” but rather part of a “systematic targeting of Palestinian athletes.”

The detentions have drawn attention within Palestinian sports circles, with officials raising concerns about the treatment of athletes amid ongoing tensions in the region.
